A negative write off is the result of an overpayment by secondary and should be reported or refunded to the insurancy company.

The same principal as reviewed in this video is applied when calculating one in network claim and one out of network claim.

Insurance overpayments should always be reported or refunded to the secondary insurance plan, not given to the patient. The only exception is self funded plans such as Aflac. Self funded plan overpayments can be refunded to the patient or applied as an account credit.
